Kengate Terrazzo- Example M41 Specification for Pre-Cast Terrazzo Tiles

-LOCATIONS:

Terrazzo tiling to entrance hall and lift lobby floors on levels Ground to 7.

 

-STANDARD:

Tiles to be produced to BS EN 13748-1: 2004.

 

-MANUFACTURER:

Kengate Terrazzo, Littleton Lane, Shepperton, Middlesex, TW17 0NF, T-01932 568 672.

 

-PRODUCT REFERENCE:

Prima Range, ref-PR03.

 

-SIZE AND THICKNESS:

300x300x28mm.

 

-SUBSTRATE:

Newly laid concrete structural slab.

 

-PREPARATION OF SUBSTRATE:

Substrate to be sound and level, suitably clean and free from cracks and other defects before bedding and terrazzo tiles are installed.

 

-BEDDING AND BUILD UP HEIGHT:

Terrazzo tiles to be laid onto a bedding mix of course sharp sand and Portland cement (OPC) in a ratio of 4:1.

Bedding to be fully bonded to the structural slab.

Ensure sand and cement is mixed to a semi-dry consistency.

Bedding and terrazzo tiles to meet the required finished floor level of 70mm above structural slab level.

-SAMPLES:

Submit 4no. representative samples size-100x100x28mm of tile ref: PR03 to form range samples.

All tiles produced and installed are to be as per the approved range samples.

-CONTROL SAMPLES:

Complete one area on site of approximately 1m2 to consist of a fully installed, working terrazzo floor in 300x300x28 format tiles.

This area is to form a representative control sample for the entire works.

All terrazzo tiling, bedding and grouting works to be installed as per the approved control sample.

This area is to incorporated into the finished works after acceptance.

-FIXING:

Set out tiling from the centre of all lobbies.

Ensure thorough compaction of bedding before tiles are fixed.

Prior to fixing, butter the back face of the terrazzo tiles with cement slurry to provide a key.

Fix tiles and firmly beat into position using rubber mallets so as not to damage the surface of the tiles.

Tiles to be fixed fully adhered to bedding.

Periodically select random tiles that have been installed and remove them to check proper adhesion to bedding has occurred.

Re-butter the back face of the removed tiles and replace.

Edges of cut tiles to be neat and tidy.

Joints in the tiles to be true to line, continuous and without steps.

Grout joints as soon as possible after bedding has sufficiently set to prevent disturbance of tiles.

Flood joints with cement based grout, remove excess from surface and allow 3 days for curing.

Grout colour to match tile matrix of PR03.

-LEVEL OF FINISHED FLOOR

When checked under a 2m long straightedge with 3mm feet at either end, placed anywhere on the tiled surface, the floor tiles should not obstruct the straightedge and the gap should be no greater than 6mm.

-PREPARATION FOR FULLY BONDED BEDDING

The newly installed concrete structural slab should be left exposed to cure for a minimum of 6 weeks before tiling installation takes place.

Prior to laying bedding, the surface of the slab should be inspected for visible defects or irregularities.

The slab should be thoroughly cleaned and cleared of all dust and debris.

Keep the surface wetted for several hours before laying bedding.

Pour over a coat of water and cement slurry in a ratio of 3:1, to provide a key for bedding.

-METAL SECTION MOVEMENT JOINTS:

Product ref: TGF1 ‘foamtail’ with 1mm thick Stainless Steel side-plates.

Side-plates to extend down at least 40mm to allow dowel-reinforcing rod to clear the terrazzo tiles.

Width of joint to be as required to take site movement tolerances.

Coloured vamac rubber insert to be beige to match as closely as possible the PR03 tile matrix and grout.

Depth of joint to be as per required FFL build up from SSL.

Installation of joints to be incorporated into the fixing process of the terrazzo tiles.

Joints to be installed level with the terrazzo tiles.

There should be no lipping or depressions between terrazzo tiles and level of the joints in excess of 3mm.

Joints to be installed in maximum 10m2 bays and set parallel out from the centre line of all lobbies.

-MECHANICAL GRINDING

Install adequate protection to surrounding areas abutting the terrazzo tiled floor.

Ensure terrazzo tiles have been wetted down sufficiently before polishing.

Mechanically polish the floors using a gas powered Turco and/or a 110v Ellis machine.

Ensure power is provided through a 5kva transformer.

Mechanically polish the floors using 36 and then 60 grit stones.

Remove residue from floor and re-grout as per 305.

Allow 3 days for the grout to cure.

Mechanically polish the floors for a second time using 80 grit stones and remove residue.

Clean the floor tiles and allow sufficient time to dry out before applying a hardener product as per 540.

-CHEMICAL FLOOR HARDENER

Product reference: Lapidolith terrazzo/concrete hardener.

Product to be applied as per manufacturers instructions.

Remove any excess hardener to prevent product drying out on the surface of the tiles.

-PROTECTION

Adequately protect areas of completed work from damage and contamination by using 2mm thick sheeted correx, or similar, taped and secured along joints.
