Pre-Cast Terrazzo Skirting

Pre-cast terrazzo skirting is an integral component of a finished terrazzo floor. When installed it provides a practical interface between floor tiles and wall finishes.

The versatile nature of terrazzo allows Kengate to produce pre-cast skirting to bespoke designs. This enables architects, designers and contactors to coordinate the terrazzo installation efficiently to help match or align with adjacent finishes.

The diagrams below illustrate three basic forms of pre-cast terrazzo skirting. However almost any bespoke design can be achieved governed only by the restrictions of the production process.

Terrazzo Floor Tile Build Up Details

Terrazzo floor tiles can be installed in 3:1 sand/cement beds of varying depths to suit site requirements. These depths are only governed by good practice as noted in the British Standard Code of Practice.

Bed depths can range from the standard minimum of 40mm to the advised maximum of 80mm. For depths in excess of 50mm it is recommended that products such as D49 mesh supplied by ROM Ltd (www.rom.co.uk) be installed to add reinforcement and maintain cohesion of the bedding.

Where there is a requirement for bedding to be built up over 80mm, for instance where a terrazzo-tiled floor is required to match the height of an adjacent raised floor finish, it is recommended that under-floor products be installed. A product such as heavy duty polystyrene void former supplied by Cordek (www.cordek.co.uk) can be utilised, the sand/cement bedding and terrazzo floor tiles then laid onto this product after the overall required height has been calibrated.

The diagrams below illustrate some basic terrazzo floor tile build up techniques. More detailed technical information can be procured from the National Federation of Terrazzo Marble & Mosaic Specialists, (www.nftmms.co.uk) of which we are an active member.

Pre-Cast Terrazzo Staircase Details

A most practical and popular use of pre-cast terrazzo throughout the construction industry is as a hard finish to a pre-formed concrete staircase.

The versatile nature of terrazzo enables designers, architects and contractors to utilise its hardwearing physical attributes and visually unique aesthetics when specifying a hard finish application for a staircase.

Pre-cast terrazzo staircases can be produced to bespoke designs to achieve site-specific requirements. For example, the colour and tone of the treads and risers can be cast to match a chosen design or an existing finish, treads can be produced with specific nosing inserts requiring notches or rebates to be formed during casting process and risers can be cast at an angle or rake to form a ‘kickback’ when installed.

As with almost all pre-cast terrazzo products there is no specified format, for instance treads and risers can be produced as separate pieces or as single units where the riser acts as a downstand attached to the tread, examples of this configuration can be seen on many staircases in London Underground stations.

To suit site-specific situations varying types of nosing details can be applied to the treads. For frequently trafficked stairs, such as those within a London Underground station, heavy-duty non-slip nosings are often used such as those supplied by

AATI (www.aati.co.uk). On less frequently trafficked staircases, such as those within a commercial or high-rise office building, where aesthetics are paramount it is often the case to use a range of nosings such as those supplied by Gradus (www.gradusworld.co.uk) who supply nosings in a varied range of styles and colours.

The diagrams below help to demonstrate the standard form of a pre-cast terrazzo tread and riser, and also include a selection of section details, which typify the versatility and bespoke design potential of pre-cast terrazzo applied as a hard finish to a staircase.

Terrazzo Movement Joint Details

It is a requirement in terrazzo floor tile installations that movement joints be installed within the finished floors to help alleviate the potential of cracks and fractures forming due to structural movement.

As such movement joint products like those supplied by Donmini (www.donmini.co.uk) are often installed to create ‘bays’ in the finished terrazzo floor to absorb a certain amount of structural movement.

For higher tolerance requirements in floor areas where there are large levels of movement, such as station platforms, structural movement joints such as those supplied by Vexcolt (www.vexcolt.co.uk) are often installed in the finished floor.

The diagrams below illustrate basic movement joint details. More detailed technical information can be procured from the National Federation of Terrazzo Marble & Mosaic Specialists, (www.nftmms.co.uk) of which we are an active member.

Pre-Cast Terrazzo Products

Pre-cast terrazzo products can be produced to suit any number of requirements for a hard finish. The versatility of terrazzo enables architects, designers and contactors to utilise both its unique physical and aesthetic attributes for an almost limitless number of uses and applications.

Where large terrazzo-tiled floors have been installed it is often practical and beneficial to the design for adjacent feature walls, upstands and columns etc to be clad in pre-cast terrazzo to either match or contrast the terrazzo floor.

On pre-cast terrazzo treads and risers an interface is often required in the form of a terrazzo finish to the staircase string. In this situation pre-cast terrazzo can be used to achieve this.

The diagrams below illustrate both the unique decorative and practical application of pre-cast terrazzo products in different environments.
